Located as the last neighboring area to Barcelona within the northeastern boundary of the Ronda, La Mina is a densely populated neighborhood that is home to over 10,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds. Despite its strong stigma, La Mina harbors a community with a robust social culture. However, years of neglect have left their mark on the housing blocks and public spaces, resulting in unhygienic situations and the deterioration of shared areas.
One of the key focuses of the project was the examination of the residential blocks. The primary emphasis was on the Estrella block. Plans were developed to enhance the quality of living, utilizing a systemic approach applicable to all blocks. The existing 70 sqm apartments, which were very similar, were reconfigured into various typologies, such as simplex and duplex apartments. Each apartment was equipped with exterior spaces and granted access to double-height shared spaces dispersed throughout the residential blocks.
Another significant aspect of the project involved addressing the long, narrow space between the Estrella residential block, the train tracks, and the highway. A new production facility was strategically positioned in this area to serve as a buffer from the noise and activity of the train and highway. The design of Cubozoa factory, featuring a long horizontal core connecting multiple production hubs, created several interconnected natural open spaces. By integrating the first two floors of the residential blocks, they became part of the same open environment.
The factory specializes in manufacturing a bio-based alternative to traditional plastics. It produces pellets and film from seaweed, harnessing its renewable properties. This raw material serves as the primary input for other manufacturing processes, enabling the existing traditional factories to switch over to a more sustainable production process. The overarching objective is to improve living circumstances by creating opportunities for the residents across educational spectrums within La Mina. This initiative caters to individuals with varying levels of education, from basic to advanced, thereby fostering a more inclusive and sustainable community.
